Das Mezzanin hat manchmal eine geringere Höhe als die üblichen Geschosse. Es befindet sich entweder als letztes Geschoss ohne Dachschräge unter dem Dach, z. B. als Dienstbotenwohnung oder als Zwischengeschoss zwischen Erdgeschoss und dem ersten Obergeschoss. Im letzteren Falle nimmt es oft nicht die volle Grundfläche ein, weil eine hohe Eingangshalle, Arkaden oder eine Durchfahrt den Raum bis zum ersten Obergeschoss einnehmen.

Um baurechtliche Bestimmungen zu umgehen, wurde das Mezzanin gerade in Wien verwendet, um die Geschosszahl auf dem Papier gering zu halten. Durch mehrfaches Einfügen von nominalen Zwischengeschossen wie dem „Halbstock“, „Tiefparterre“, „Halbparterre“ und dem „Hochparterre“ wurde die Anzahl der Geschosse erhöht, ohne die Auflagen einhalten zu müssen, die mit zusätzlichen Stockwerken verbunden gewesen wären. Diese Art des Bauens findet man unter anderem auch im Wiener Rathaus.

In architecture, a mezzanine or entresol is an intermediate floor between main floors of a building, and therefore typically not counted among the overall floors of a building. Often, a mezzanine is low-ceilinged and projects in the form of a balcony. The term is also used for the lowest balcony in a theatre, or for the first few rows of seats in that balcony.

The floor often projects itself from the walls and does not completely close the view of the ceiling from ground floor. In short, the Mezzanine Floor and the ground floor share the same ceiling. There is a belief that a mezzanine floor is always located between the ground floor and the first floor but it is not unusual to have mezzanine floors in the upper floors of a building.

In Palladian architecture the mezzanine is a low upper floor, usually for servants and/or storage.

The mezzanine is often used in shops and similar spaces for storage of tools or materials. The high roof of the shop is ideal for a mezzanine, and offices can be put below it.

In stadiums, the "mezzanine" level is a term often used for premium or "club level" seating, typically just a few rows deep and hanging from the upper tier, affording an unobstructed view of the playing field.
